New Liverpool signing Jose Enrique has backed a fit-again Andy Carroll to rediscover his best goalscoring form.

Enrique was a team-mate of the England international at Newcastle and followed him to Anfield seven months after the striker made his club-record £35million move in January.

During the interim period Enrique could see the 22-year-old front man was nowhere near his best - Carroll arrived on Merseyside with a thigh injury and did not make his debut until early March - but has noticed a difference in the player already.

"I watched him play last season and I knew he wasn't fit here," said the Spaniard, who joined the Reds for £6million on Friday and made a solid debut against Sunderland just over 24 hours later.

"I don't care if the player is Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, if a player is not fit, he is not fit.

"For us in Newcastle he was brilliant and I am sure he will be brilliant for Liverpool.

"He is a very good player. When a club like Liverpool pays £35million for Andy I know it is not lucky.

"It is because they think he is a good player. I am sure he is going to do a lot of things very good for us.

"He is playing very well in his position and he is going to be an important player this season."
