France midfielder N’Golo Kante has revealed he held talks with Jose Mourinho over a move to Manchester United before he sealed his switch to Chelsea in July.
Paris Saint-Germain appeared to be Chelsea’s big rivals to sign Leicester’s Premier League title winning midfield enforcer last summer, but now it has emerged that United were also in the mix for his services.
Kante admits he had a “good feeling” after talks with incoming Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, but he was clearly excited by the prospect of a phone chat with Mourinho.
“It was amazing to have Mourinho call me, even though I’d been warned before how he would appeal to me,” said Kante, in quotes appearing in The Sun.
“I listened to his arguments about why I should move to United.
“At that time I was hesitant between staying at Leicester or leaving for Chelsea.
“My discussions with them were already well underway. But when I spoke, I had a good feeling with Conte.”
Meanwhile, Kante suggested he feels at home in an A-list Chelsea dressing room, but he admitted he still has some way to go before he is a complete player to compare with his former Leicester team-mate Riyad Mahrez.
“At Chelsea I’m in a star-studded dressing room,” he added. ”Being the star of the game doesn’t interest me. That’s the highest level, unless you have exceptional qualities.
“Yes, I feel I’m a pretty complete player, but I’m not an outstanding player. Someone like Riyad Mahrez, yes, he has a real technical talent.”
