Chelsea to stave off PSG swoop for Torres

Fernando Torres in action for Chelsea last weekend against Sunderland

Chelsea have not discussed selling Fernando Torres to Paris St-Germain despite reports that their former manager Carlo Ancelotti, who has recently taken over at the French club, has said he is interested in the Spaniard, writes sam wallace.

Selling Torres is not currently a consideration for the club and there is no appetite from the player for a move almost one year since his record-breaking £50m transfer from Liverpool.

Ancelotti was quoted as saying that Torres was one of a number of players being touted "officially or not" on the market, along with Carlos Tevez, Dimitar Berbatov, Roman Pavlyuchenko, Edinson Cavani and Fernando Llorente.

With Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou at the African Cup of Nations this month there would be little sense in Chelsea taking a loss on Torres by selling him.

Having completed the signing of Gary Cahill over the weekend, they anticipate just one more signing this month, expected to be a squad player rather than a marquee name and likely to be an attacker.

Juventus winger Milos Krasic has been suggested as a potential addition in January. As of yesterday the club denied that there were any plans in place to make a move for Lille's attacking midfielder Eden Hazard. (© Daily Telegraph, London)

Rangers defender David Weir wants to pursue a career in England at the age of 41, after announcing he will quit Ibrox on Friday due to a lack of first-team opportunities.

West Ham yesterday stepped up their efforts to sign a new striker, lodging an improved bid of £5m for Huddersfield's highly-rated Jordan Rhodes and offering £3m for Watford's sought-after England U-21 star Marvin Sordell.

Arsenal are in no rush to finalise a new contract for Andrey Arshavin, suggesting that his performances between now and the end of the season will determine his future at the club.

Arshavin's contract expires next year, but it is understood that there have been no talks as yet between the Gunners and their record signing. He will not, however, be sold in the current transfer window.

Birmingham have rejected an undisclosed offer from West Brom for Liam Ridgewell.

The defender confirmed he wanted to quit St Andrews last summer following relegation to the Championship.

Swansea have signed highly-rated Chelsea midfielder Josh McEachran on loan for the rest of the season.
