Chelsea must sell Drogba to get the best out of Torres, says former boss Carlo Ancelotti

Wednesday January 18 2012

CARLO Ancelotti has advised his successor at Chelsea manager, Andre Villas-Boas, to sell Didier Drogba saying the Ivorian is cramping the style of striker Fernando Torres.

Ancelotti, who was sacked by Chelsea in May said: "Didier is like Filippo Inzaghi, he tends to devour whoever is in his way. It is not malice, they are just made like that."

"Take Torres and his [goalscoring] crisis. If you decide to invest so heavily in him you have to sell Drogba."

Drogba has failed to agree to a new one-year contract at Stamford Bridge and looks likely to be leaving the club on a free-transfer when his deal expires at the end of the season.

Chelsea spent a British transfer record sum of £50 million to sign Torres from Liverpool a year ago, but the Spaniard has repaid the investment with only five goals.

Torres, who has not scored since mid-October, has failed to gel with Drogba and, in recent weeks, Ancelotti's successor Villas-Boas has been playing just one striker up front.

Drogba's departure for the African Cup of Nations has given Torres a chance to prove himself in the team and in the game against Sunderland on Saturday he showed signs that he is getting back to his best, setting up the goal for Frank Lampard which gave Chelsea ta 1-0 victory.

Torres has been repeatedly linked with a move away from the Bridge, with several agents attempting to engineer a deal.

PSG have been mentioned as a potential destination, but Chelsea are adamant Torres is not for sale.

Meanwhile, French Ligue 1 champions Lille are determined to hang on to their star striker Edin Hazard during the transfer window amid speculation that Chelsea are closing in on a £25m deal.

Lille's resolve has been tested by the player admitting he wants to secure a move away, while the list of potential suitors is growing by the week.

However, Lille are continuing to deny they will be forced to sell the winger.
