Chelsea could make a surprise move for Liverpool striker Rickie Lambert in the summer, with the 33-year-old seen as the ideal replacement for Didier Drogba.

According to the Mirror, Chelsea scouts watched the former Southampton forward in action against QPR at the weekend.

The newly-crowned Premier League champions will get a first look at their target this weekend when they go head-to-head at Stamford Bridge.

Lambert has been used sparingly at Anfield since his switch from St Mary's and has struggled for first-team football despite a lengthy lay-off to Daniel Sturridge and Mario Balotelli being out of form.

Drogba, meanwhile, is out of contract at Chelsea in the summer, and while he would love to continue his playing days under Jose Mourinho, the Blues manager has yet to confirm his plans and thoughts on the 37-year-old.

Lambert had been linked with a switch to Aston Villa before opting for Liverpool during last year's summer transfer window.

He has also been rumoured to be on Crystal Palace and Hull's wishlists when the window reopens in July.

PSG striker Edinson Cavani is another striker target for Mourinho, however.

The Express believes that Chelsea will join Manchester United and Arsenal in the transfer tussle for Cavani.

Cavani has scored 13 goals in Ligue 1 this season.

“We need a couple of players to give more strength and depth to the squad and give us that little bit extra to progress in the Champions League,” Mourinho has said.
