Luis Suarez scored a hat-trick as Barcelona won 6-1 at home to Celta Vigo to maintain their grip on top spot in La Liga, but his feat was overshadowed by Lionel Messi's outrageous penalty assist for his third goal.
Barça were 3-1 ahead with eight minutes to go when they were awarded a penalty. Messi, needing just one more goal for 300 in La Liga, stepped up but instead of shooting rolled the ball forward at an angle to his right for Suarez, running in from the edge of the penalty area, to score.
Messi had opened the scoring with a curling free-kick but a John Guidetti penalty made the score 1-1 at half time. Barça ran riot after the break thanks to Suarez's treble and goals from Neymar and Ivan Rakitic.
A week after ending a scoring drought of five months with his 100th goal for Atletico Madrid, Fernando Torres was on target again to earn Diego Simeone's side a 1-0 win at lowly Getafe.
On Saturday, Gary Neville could finally celebrate a La Liga victory with Valencia as Denis Cheryshev's diving header with 14 minutes to go clinched a 2-1 home win over Espanyo.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Real Madrid kept up the pressure on their title rivals with a convincing 4-2 victory over Athletic Bilbao.
Paris Saint-Germain, who play Chelsea in the Champions League, have been rocked by the appearance of a video on the internet in which controversial Ivorian defender Serge Aurier appears to call coach Laurent Blanc a "faggot" and insults many of his team-mates. PSG drew 0-0 with Lille on Saturday.
Bayern Munich shrugged off their injury problems with a 3-1 win at Augsburg to restore their eight-point cushion in the Bundesliga.
Robert Lewandowski scored twice and Thomas Muller added Bayern's third with his 86th Bundesliga goal and 15th of the current season.
