Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has responded to the criticism of him holding a shisha pipe in a nightclub by uploading a video on Instagram of himself hard at work in the gym.

In a pointed message to those who have questioned his lifestyle, Wilshere wrote alongside the video: "Worry about your character not your reputation, because your character is who you are and your reputation is only what people who don't know you think about you".

Wilshere's response surfaced after it emerged that the 23-year-old will face a reprimand from Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and will again be reminded of his responsibilities.

The Arsenal and England midfielder has twice previously been pictured smoking and there is considerable exasperation inside his club at another similar incident, especially as the 23-year-old is in the final stages of recovery from ankle surgery. He is due to resume full training next week.

Wilshere may face a club fine, although Wenger will give his player the chance to fully explain his side of the incident.

Wilshere was photographed with three young women and a shisha pipe on an image that was published on Instagram and then removed before being subsequently reposted on Twitter on Wednesday night. It is understood that the picture was taken at the Sports Bar and Grill in Piccadilly.

It follows goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny being fined last month for lighting up a cigarette in the dressing room after the 2-0 defeat by Southampton.

Meanwhile, Alexis Sanchez will miss tomorrow's derby against Tottenham at White Hart Lane, but Danny Welbeck is fit and will return to the squad.
