Arsenal sign Arteta and Benayoun
Arsenal last night completed a sensational last-gasp swoop for Mikel Arteta as the transfer window slammed shut.
The Gunners looked to have missed out on Arteta earlier in the night after Everton rejected a bid for their star midfielder.
But Arteta reportedly forced the issue and Arsenal reached an agreement with their Premier League rivals before the 11.0pm deadline, revealing they had signed the 29-year-old Spaniard on a four-year contract.
Yossi Benayoun also completed a season-long loan move to Arsenal from Chelsea, while the Gunners confirmed the signings yesterday of left-back Andre Santos from Fenerbahce and centre-back Per Mertesacker, who arrived from Werder Bremen.
Leaving the Emirates is Nicklas Bendtner, who last night signed a year-long loan deal with Sunderland. The move reunites him with Steve Bruce, under whom he enjoyed a successful loan period with Birmingham in 2006-07.
