Video: Portland take early lead in MLS Cup Final after goalkeeping howler
Major League Soccer has its critics and the opening goal of the season finale will have done little to silence those doubters.
Nine months after the season began, Columbus Crew take on Portland Timbers for the MLS Cup in a final that few had predicted.
Two teams lacking household names – former Aston Villa and Birmingham City defender Liam Ridgewell is in the Portland rearguard and familiar to Premier League fans– clashed in the MapFre Stadium in Ohio and the home side couldn’t have got off to a worse start.
After just 27 seconds they trailed after a blunder from goalkeeper Steve Clark. After taking a backpass, his heavy touch allowed Diego Valeri to block down the hesitant shotstopper and put Portland into a lead after just 27 seconds.
Watch goal below:
Rodney Wallace doubled their advantage six minutes later before Kei Ansu Kamara pulled one back with the third goal inside twenty minutes with a scrappy effort.
Less than half a minute into the final! Doesn't help alter the stereotype that the MLS is still pants https://t.co/sZ8o712hSp— Alan Smith (@alansmith90) December 6, 2015
