Christian Benteke has served a timely reminder to Jurgen Klopp that he is more than capable than leading the Liverpool attack with an impressive performance in the Europa League tonight.

Bordeaux were the visitors tonight and the former Aston Villa frontman, who has struggled for full fitness since his £32,5m summer switch was given his chance to shine at Anfield.

The Belgian international won the penalty which James Milner dispatched to put the Reds ahead, but it was his rocket of a finish that restored Liverpool’s lead just before the interval that really caught the eye.

With one touch he controlled the cross before unleashing a thunderbolt past Bordeaux goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso.

Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet meanwhile will have to take full responsibility for Bordeaux's equaliser as he was penalised for holding onto the ball for too long which resulted in the visitors scoring from the subsequent indirect free-kick before his international colleague struck for his fifth goal in a Liverpool jersey.
