Working as a pundit in his homeland, Van Hooijdonk said Van Persie needed to be dropped by Louis van Gaal, an opinion that angered the player.

After Van Persie, recently told Van Hooijdonk he should "stick to playing golf", rather than comment on his playing career in the Turkish Super Lig, the pundit fired the latest shot across the bows in their onpoaing spat.

“I don’t know what his problem is. It says more about him than about me, but I did think for a second: ‘You a*******’, Van Hooijdonk said on Dutch television show Derksen &.

“I may have been too soft on him, so people could not say I wanted to take revenge on him when I reacted back then.

“Obviously he has more problems with me than I with him.”
