Gary Neville's first league game in charge of Valencia was an eventful one after his new club had a man sent off and needed an Eibar own goal to rescue a 1-1 draw at the modest Basque side in La Liga.
Eibar took a deserved lead moments before the break through Sergi Enrich. Lucas Orban saw red in the 63rd minute. Eibar's Saul Berjon saw his spot-kick saved, and then home defender David Junca turned the ball into his own net four minutes from time.
Antoine Griezmann's stunning strike helped Atletico Madrid move joint top after a 2-1 win over Athletic Bilbao on a day when their city rivals Real slumped to a 1-0 defeat at Villarreal.
Diego Simeone's side join Barcelona at the top of the table on 35 points, with Real a further five points back in third. Roberto Soldado netted early on and the Yellow Submarine held off waves of attacks to increase the pressure on Rafael Benitez.
Barca threw a two-goal lead away as late strikes from Lucas Perez and Alex Bergantinos gave Deportivo La Coruna a 2-2 draw on Saturday. It was Barca's second successive league draw.
Bayern Munich go into the Bundesliga winter break five points clear in top spot after beating Ingolstadt 2-0 on Saturday with goals from Robert Lewandowski and Philipp Lahm. Borussia Dortmund beat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1 yesterday.
