"My choice was get a punch or play Robbie Keane" - LA Galaxy boss Bruce Arena
LA Galaxy boss Bruce Arena gave his stark reasonings for playing Ireland captain Robbie Keane in his side's 5-0 win over Comunicaciones FC last night.
Keane's appearance was a surprise in Galaxy's first CONCACAF Champions League as the 35-year-old was expected to be rested ahead of MLS encounter with NYCFC.
The upcoming league clash will see the former Spurs striker face down a strong side which features Andrea Pirlo, Frank Lampard and David Villa.
"My thinking was that I'd either get punched in the face by Robbie or I'd play him. He wanted to play. At my age, I have to bend a little bit. We were going to rotate a few players for sure," said Arena.
"Gyasi [Zardes] has logged a lot of minutes, and we wanted to give him a little bit of a break. The options we had tonight were a little bit limited. Although we dressed seven players, but about three of those players weren’t going to step on the field tonight. Robbie [Keane] felt good and wanted to play.”
