Jack Charlton looks on as former club Middlesbrough win promotion to the Premier League

Jack Charlton was at the Riverside Stadium to witness Middlesbrough win promotion to the Premier League this afternoon.

Among the scenes of pandemonium, the 80-year-old former Republic of Ireland boss could be seen looking down from the stands as Middlesbrough, the club he managed on a caretaker basis 32 years ago, were promoted to England’s top flight for the fourth time in the Premier League era.

The hosts' 1-1 draw with the Chris Houghton managed Brighton was enough to see them join Burnley in automatic promotion, which will see each club earn a near €200m windfall.

Christhian Stuani gave ‘Boro the lead before Dale Stephens equalised for the Seagulls, and the home faithful were then forced to sit through eight minutes of additional time before their dream was realised. 

Middlesbrough return to the Premier League for the first time in seven years, while Brighton must now navigate the playoffs if they are go up.
