Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta will be sidelined for up to eight weeks after injuring knee ligaments in their dramatic 3-2 win over Valencia.
Lionel Messi converted an injury-time penalty to give Barca all three points in Saturday's clash. Messi had given Barca a controversial lead after an offside Luis Suarez jumped out the way of his low shot.
Valencia fought back to take a 2-1 advantage with fine goals from Barca loanee Munir el Haddadi and Rodrigo only for Suarez to equalise before winning the penalty which Messi confidently converted.
Real Madrid claimed top spot as Alvaro Morata celebrated his 24th birthday by scoring the winning goal a 2-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao. Karim Benzema was also on target.
Meanwhile, 18-year-old Manuel Locatelli hit the winner with a spectacular shot from the edge of the box as AC Milan beat Juventus for the first time since November 2012 to move to within two points of the Serie A leaders.
In Holland, 36-year-old skipper Dirk Kuyt struck with five minutes left to earn unbeaten Feyenoord a 1-1 draw with Ajax, which means the gap between the top two remains at five points.
