Irish-qualified striker Scott Hogan is facing a spell on the sidelines after being stretchered off in Aston Villa's Championship loss to Newcastle last night.

Hogan has yet to decide on his international future after hedging his bets, with a prolific run of form at Brentford earning him a lucrative move to Villa in the January transfer window.

But he appeared to land awkwardly on his ankle towards the end of another defeat for his new employer and may now have to endure another long lay-off.

Hogan's career has been stalled by long-term injuries, with two serious knee problems at Brentford keeping him out of the game for almost two years.

Martin O'Neill was interested in calling Hogan up last year and spoke with the player's agent but was told that he needed to use international breaks to work on his rehab.

However, it's understood that the player's representatives wanted to keep the option of an England call-up open. The decision on his future could be delayed if this turns out to be a serious problem.
