DCU hit eight goals without reply against Royal College of Surgeons to get their bid for a first Irish Universities Collingwood Cup off to a bright start.

The opening round of fixtures in the four-day tournament hosted for the first time by Maynooth University produced little in the way of surprise results.

NUI Galway, Trinity College Dublin along with DCU all progressed into today's quarter-finals with relative ease.

Jamie Lennon and full-back Craig Farrelly bagged braces for DCU, with Karl Melling, Alan O'Sullivan, Aaron Ralph and Ross Taheny also on target.

DCU now face NUIG, who beat Mary Immaculate College Limerick 3-1 with goals from Eoin Walsh, Josh Marvesley and Conor Barry (penalty).

Rory Finnegan pulled back a consolation from the penalty spot.

Trinity squeezed past Ulster University 3-1 thanks to two late goals from Ronan Hanaphy - Oisin Roper had levelled on 70 minutes to cancel out Eoghan Vaughan's first-half goal for Trinity.

The Dubliners will now face strong favourites UCC in this morning's quarter-final.
