New Chelsea signing Diego Costa was lucky to escape serious injury after falling victim to a horrendous tackle by Fenerbahce defender Bruno Alves in a pre-season friendly on Friday night.

The Brazilian was advancing into the final third of the pitch when Alves seized the opportunity to dive in. The Portuguese centre-back found himself nowhere near the ball though, instead hacking Costa down with both feet at knee height.

Fortunately Costa was not injured in the incident, while Alves was let off with a yellow card.

The £32million summer signing had earlier put Chelsea ahead with a brilliant individual goal to set up a 2-0 win

Manager Jose Mourinho will be relieved his star forward did not suffer any ill effects from the Alves challenge with only Didier Drogba and Fernando Torres as backup.
