Atletico Madrid maintained top spot in La Liga after hammering Granada 7-1 and now lead city rivals Real, who ended a run of four successive draws by beating Real Betis 6-1 in Seville, on goal difference.
Raphael Varane put Real in front in the fourth minute, Karim Benzema added a second and Marcelo scuffed in the third before Isco notched a brace and Cristiano Ronaldo joined the scorers. It started badly for Diego Simeone's Atletico side as Isaac Cuenca gave rock-bottom Granada a shock lead with a smart 18th-minute volley but the hosts charged back thanks to a Yannick Carrasco hat-trick.
Elsewhere, Lionel Messi scored within three minutes of returning to action for the first time in over three weeks to help fire Barcelona 4-0 victory over Deportivo La Coruna at the Nou Camp.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich twice surrendered the lead in a 2-2 Bundesliga draw at 10-man Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Moenchengladbach missed two penalties in a goalless draw against Hamburg SV.
In Italy, Paulo Dybala notched up a brace for leaders Juventus in their 2-1 win over Udinese.
