'Operation Tango' twists knife in gullible Bhoys fans

Saturday May 30 2009

FOOTBALL can be a cruel game, but rival fans can be truly vindictive.

Take last Sunday's final day of the season in the Scottish Premier League. Celtic needed to beat Hearts at home, while hoping that Dundee United could do them a favour and stop Rangers from winning.

So, after Rangers took an early lead through Kyle Lafferty at Tannadice, Hoops fans' heads began to drop. But midway through the first half a huge roar went up around Celtic Park......it seemed that Dundee United were keeping their part of the bargain and had grabbed an equaliser.

However, it turned out to be a hoax. Apparently, some scheming Gers fans had got together and launched 'Operation Tango,' whereby they would all text their Celtic-supporting friends and associates at the same time, telling them that Dundee United had equalised.

So, when the first texts came through, word spread faster than an Irish model bagging a millionaire husband. Sadly though -- depending on who you support of course -- it soon became very clear that it was still 1-0 to Rangers.

Frankly, as hoaxes go, this one is right up there with the 'Hitler diaries' and the 'War of the Worlds.'

Naturally, Rangers fans have been milking this one and, to be fair, we can't blame them one little bit.
