Noble Puyol's perfect pass
NOBODY saw one of sport's great lump-in-the-throat moments coming as Wembley prepared for Carles Puyol to hoist the European Cup.
Barcelona's lion-hearted general must have been savouring the prospect of lifting the trophy. But Puyol saw a bigger picture, so he passed his armband to an astonished and humbled Eric Abidal, who had 10 weeks earlier been fearing for not just his future in the game, but for his life, when he underwent surgery to remove a tumour from his liver.
"Go and lift the cup," Puyol told him. And, when the Frenchman did, it felt just the perfect, soaring note on which to end an exhilarating night . "It's spectacular. I'm so thankful for the gesture," the beaming Frenchman said.
