N'Golo Kante made his Chelsea debut against West Ham following his multi-million pound move from Premier League champions Leicester.
Here, Press Association Sport looks at the midfielder's contribution in the 2-1 victory.
As expected, the France international lined up just in front of the Blues' back four, alongside Nemanja Matic. He showed defensive discipline while still managing to cover plenty of ground for his team.
He arguably should not have been on the pitch to see the game out. After picking up a yellow card for scything down Andy Carroll inside three minutes, he glanced nervously at referee Anthony Taylor following a mistimed challenge on international team-mate Dimitri Payet six minutes from time before escaping unpunished.
One of the stand-out attributes from his time with the Foxes was his energy levels and he maintained them in this game. He got about the pitch and will be a willing runner for the season to come.
A solid if unspectacular start for the central midfielder. It could have ended on a sour note had his tackle on Payet been properly punished.
