Murphy magic boosts Ipswich

Wednesday March 10 2010

Daryl Murphy struck twice as Ipswich eased their relegation fears with a comfortable victory over promotion hopefuls Cardiff.

The on-loan Sunderland striker netted his fourth and fifth goals for the club to seal all three points for Ipswich, who extended their unbeaten run at home to 12 matches and moved four points clear of the bottom three in the Championship.

"We've given him a new lease of life and he could be in double figures already," said temporary boss Roy Keane. "He's getting chances in every game and I was pleased with his goals. They were poacher's goals, particularly the second one."

Murphy opened his account after 18 minutes. Jack Colback picked him out with a superb pass and the striker was on hand to fire home -- his first in five games -- from close range.

The Bluebirds' wasteful finishing subsequently proved costly as Keane's men doubled their advantage after 58 minutes.

Owen Garvan's initial effort was excellently touched away by David Marshall, but Murphy was on hand to net the rebound and the clincher.
