Patrice Evra has claimed that Jose Mourinho gave the green light for his return to Manchester United last month, but the move was blocked as he was forced to sign for Marseille instead.

France international Evra was strongly linked with an emotional return to Manchester as he plotted a move away from Juventus, with United supporters excited by the prospect of a comeback for player who enjoyed eight highly successful years with the Old Trafford club.

Those rumours appear to have been accurate, with Evra confirming in an interview with bein Sports that he was close to agreeing a deal with United.

“I tried to come back to Manchester United, I tell the truth, I have nothing to hide,” he stated.

Jose Mourinho was okay to that, but somebody was a little bit not sure about my return at home.

“When I know Manchester was closed, I opened every other door and there was a lot of clubs. When Marseille comes, I chose Marseille straight away.”

It is not clear who ended 35-year-old Evra’s hopes of a second spell with United, yet his maturing years may have been one of the reasons why Old Trafford officials would have been reluctant to add him to their wage bill.

What seems clear is that Mourinho was eager to bring back a United fans favorite, which may also suggest he is keen to strengthen his options in the left full-back position.
