McGregor in police probe

DESPITE being blessed with the prime attributes of a wily football manager -- eyes in the back of his head and 20/20 vision of players' foibles -- Walter Smith was blindsided yet again in the run-up to tomorrow's crucial Old Firm derby at Ibrox by his accident-prone goalkeeper Allan McGregor.
McGregor sustained an eye injury after attending a birthday party for Cavan-born loaned-out Celtic forward Cillian Sheridan last weekend. McGregor complained to the police about an 'assault' outside the Glasgow nightclub where the party was held. But police feel there are inconsistencies in McGregor's account of events.
Moreover, they found it difficult to make contact with him and detectives were obliged to visit Rangers' training ground yesterday lunchtime. So just as Smith was facing the media inside, his 'keeper -- physically fit to play tomorrow -- left to accompany the police to a station in the city.
It is understood that the areas of his narrative which were revisited included the question of his attendance at another Glasgow establishment last Saturday -- the Seventh Heaven club -- 'Scotland's Premier Lap Dancing Club' -- which featured an event called the Megastrip on that evening.
It is understood that CCTV footage of both nightclubs has played a part in the fresh investigation.
