JAMES McCARTHY'S chances of impressing Giovanni Trapattoni next month appear doomed after he sustained a serious ankle injury on Saturday.

The 19-year-old Wigan midfielder was carried off after a challenge by Bolton's Fabrice Muamba, and his club are now anxiously waiting for the results of a hospital scan. Manager Roberto Martinez feared the worst after the game, hoping that the setback doesn't stunt the midfielder's rapid progress.

"It's a real shame because he's a very young, but he's very mature on the pitch and he's been performing in a very special manner," he said.

McCarthy was set to be called up by Trapattoni for the friendly with Norway on November 17. The Italian has indicated that he wishes to use the game to try out potential stars of the future and McCarthy is top of the list.

Muamba expressed sympathy with the youngster and said there was no malice in the tackle. "When I came in so fast, I slightly nicked the ball and he then landed awkwardly. I didn't go in to injure James," he said.

In the game itself, Johan Elmander earned Bolton a point with a goal mid-way through the second half, seven minutes after Hugo Rodallega gave Wigan the lead.
