In one of the longest-running transfer sagas still going, Manchester United are FINALLY closing in on Mats Hummels.

So reports The Daily Mirror, with the Borussia Dortmund defender understood to have told his Germany teammates during the international break that a summer move to Old Trafford is on the verge of being agreed.

A source close to the Germany camp said: "He is preparing his exit and he gave some of the players signs that his transfer is close."

Experienced centre-back Hummels is likely to cost around £35m and a move to United would see boss Louis van Gaal land his No 1 defensive target.

World Cup winner Hummels said: "I think moving abroad will be good for my professional and personal well-being. Eventually, I'd like to leave the Bundesliga.

"I'm being open about this because I'm not a fan of those who claim they are staying but, behind the scenes, have actually secretly agreed a transfer away from their current club.

"Everyone knows how much I love it at Dortmund, but I also want to make sure I'm part of a strong team with powerful players."

United are also lining up an £11m move to beat off competition from Liverpool and Tottenham for Lille defender Simon Kjaer, according to The Express.

Kjaer has also been linked with Juventus, Monaco and Zenit St. Petersburg.

The move would reportedly make Kjaer the most expensive Danish player of all time - eclipsing Christian Eriksen's move from Ajax to Spurs in 2013.

Meanwhile, United are adamant they will not enter a bidding war for Paul Pogba - despite doubts over Kevin Strootman's fitness.

This is according to The Manchester Evening News who claim Holland international Strootman is still Van Gaal's first-choice option as he looks to sign a world-class midfielder this summer.

The 25-year-old suffered a setback in his recovery from knee ligament damage in January - and will have to prove his fitness before United commit to a bid in excess of £40m.

Should he fail to do that then Van Gaal will have to consider alternative options, with Pogba continually linked with a return to Old Trafford.

Apparently, Sami Khedira, who is out of contract at Real Madrid, and former City midfielder Nigel de Jong are other potential targets if United shelve their plans for Strootman.

And finally, Van Gaal is reportedly willing to offer Javier Hernandez to Southampton in exchange for highly-rated right-back Nathaniel Clyne in a £25.7m deal this summer.

The Metro claims that, with United forward Hernandez - who is currently on loan at Real Madrid - being deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, the Red Devils are ready to offer Southampton a huge fee to lure Clyne to the club.

It is claimed that United value Hernandez at about £10m and would be willing to pay a further £15m to land Clyne, who they have watched closely since last season.
