Manchester United 'on the verge' of sealing Antoine Griezmann deal - latest reports
Manchester United are ‘on the verge’ of agreeing a deal to sign Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann, after a fresh round of speculation in England and France.
United have been heavily linked with a move for France international Griezmann over the last few months, but the marksman who celebrated his 26th birthday on Tuesday has stated that he has reservations about a move to England, citing the weather and style of football as reasons to remain in Spain.
However, Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has confirmed that his club are powerless to stop a rival club signing Griezmann, who has a €100m release clause in his current contract and United are believed to be ready to meet that asking price.
Now L’Equipe in France are reporting that Griezmann and his advisers have decided to make a move away from Atletico at the end of this season, with the Manchester Evening News reporting the striker will move to Old Trafford as Jose Mourinho’s marquee summer capture.
Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked with a move to Griezmann, with Atletico boss Simeone fuelling rumours of an imminent move with his latest comments.
After he was asked by Spanish outlet AS whether Griezmann could leave Atletico at the end of this season, Simeone said: "Yes, because there is a termination clause. There is no security.
“He told me (last year) if you stay, I'll stay. And I said yes, why would I not stay? And they began to work with the representatives for everything that had to be signed and he stayed.
“From now on I do not know what can happen. He would never let me tell him to stay. I did not do it with (Diego) Costa or (Radamel) Falcao.
“To the players who have given me life I accompany them in the decisions that they make, but it’s clear that for as long as he stays, the team and the club will continue to grow.”
The Griezmann to United rumours have long since become repetitive and while the striker has insisted he is in no rush to leave Atletico, a €100m deal would be hard to turn down for all sides in what could be the transfer move of the summer.
