Manchester United are reported to have made their first moves to sign Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne, according to ESPN.

Clyne has been heavily linked with a move to United in recent month, with his decision to stall on signing a new contract fuelling suggestions that he is holding out for a move to Old Trafford.

Now ESPN are suggesting that United have registered their interest in signing Clyne, with Southampton reported looking for a fee in excess of £18m before they would consider a deal.

Southampton sold Luke Shaw to Manchester United in a £27m deal last summer and the candid comments of Southampton manager Ronald Koeman when he was asked about Clyne's future on Thursday suggests a decision on the future of the England full-back is imminent.

“We’re still speaking with Clyney and his agent, but of course we have to know in 10 days,” said Koeman.

“The club is doing an offer the maximum what we can do and then we expect the player’s answer.

“I’ve spoken to Clyney, he’s very happy and of course there is some interest but nobody has really bid for the player. All the players are happy with how the team is doing.

“It’s football, you never know. In football if you go in your last season of contract, we don’t like that.”

United's move for Clyne would appear to confirm that the Old Trafford club are already starting to start their transfer trading for the summer, with the Borrusia Dortmund duo of Mats Hummels and Ilkay Gundogan both strongly linked with moves to join Louis van Gaal's side.

PSV Eindhoven have also confirmed that United have been in contact over a possible move to sign their Dutch winger Memphis Depay.
