Hi °C | Lo °C A MALTA international who appealed against a 10-year suspension for match-fixing has had it increased to a lifetime ban by UEFA.
Kevin Sammut was judged to have attempted to manipulate the outcome of a Euro 2008 qualifying match against Norway in June 2007, which Malta lost 4-0 in Oslo.
Sammut, 31, had originally been handed a 10-year suspension in August but he appealed against the decision - as did UEFA's disciplinary inspector, who requested a life ban to be imposed.
UEFA said in a statement: "Maltese footballer Kevin Sammut has been banned from football-related activity for life for breaching UEFA's principles of integrity and sportsmanship."
Two other Malta players, Kenneth Scicluna and Stephen Wellman, escaped disciplinary action after UEFA's appeals body "considered that the findings of the disciplinary inspector were insufficient to take disciplinary measures".
