Twigg leads UCD rout

UCD 1 Shamrock Rovers 6

It was all academic for Shamrock Rovers at UCD last night. But then the numbers couldn't fail to add up when you've got Gary Twigg back to his best.

The striker had scored twice before his pace led to a red card for the hapless Students.

On 31 minutes, Ger Barron palmed a set-piece on to the bar, but Twigg was on hand to finish. Eight minutes later, the Scot again showed his opportunism, when sweeping home Ronan Finn's cross.

UCD's task got even harder just before half-time as captain Michael Leahy was sent off for taking down Twigg as the striker went through on goal.

Karl Sheppard extended the Hoops' lead after half-time, heading home Gary McCabe's cross, while 20 minutes from time, Billy Dennehy's deflected shot added to the rout before sub Ciaran Kilduff headed home the fifth.

There was some consolation for UCD, though, as Darren Meenan scored one of the goals of the season with a magnificent curling effort, only for Kilduff to reply with his second and Rovers' sixth.
