Shamrock Rovers needed a late winner from 17-year-old Dean Dillon – his first senior goal of the club – as they laboured into the last four of the EA Sports Cup at Tallaght Stadium.

It’s the sixth year in a row for the Hoops to qualify for the semi-finals, but Stephen Bradley’s side made hard work of seeing off their First Division opponents.

Though Longford goalkeeper Jack Brady was worked by Dillon and Sean Boyd at either end of a first half that they dominated, Dillon wasted several openings while Shane Hanney scuffed a shot off target following the move of the half.

Longford had more about them after the break, producing their first shot on 57 minutes when Stephen Walsh’s effort was blocked by Sean Heaney.

Darren Meenan and Miele had chances for Rovers before the telling moment in the game arrived six minutes from time.

Roberto Lopes won the ball deep in Rovers’ half and fed Miele, who dribbled some 50 yards before threading the ball through for Dillon who drilled his low shot into the far corner.

SHAMROCK ROVERS – Horgan; Hanney, Webster, Heaney, Clarke; Corry (Lopes, 73), Bone (English, 86); Miele, Dillon, Doona (Meenan, 59); Boyd.

LONGFORD TOWN – Brady; Friel, Gorman, O’Reilly, Langtry; McGlade, Boyne (Curran, 87), Dillon, Zambra, Chambers (Cowan, 83); Walsh.
