MICHAEL BARKER'S finish in stoppage-time saw Bray climb out of the relegation zone.
Just as it appeared Athlone would end their away hoodoo to move to within three points of Wanderers, David Cassidy's 92nd-minute corner was cleared to Barker.
The full-back bent his 22-yard shot to the roof of the net to end an eight-game losing streak.
With just a single point to show from their previous 10 away trips this season, the Midlanders took a seventh-minute lead.
Eric Foley lofted in a left-wing corner. It missed a crowded front post but went in off Bray's Dave Scully under pressure from Town skipper Alan Byrne.
The visitors nearly doubled that lead in spectacular fashion on the half-hour.
Kealan Dillon and Foley played a couple of one-twos in their own half before Dillon's pass released Graham Rusk. He dinked the ball over Shane Redmond but it dropped wide.
Athlone went close again eight minutes after the interval. Philly Gorman evaded Niall Cooney and his shot was parried by Redmond with Shane O'Connor clearing.
