Sheppard double helps Cork down Derry
Cork City 3 Derry City 0
Cork City maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a comfortable victory at Turner's Cross.
John O'Flynn gave John Caulfield's men an early lead and Karl Sheppard scored in either half to put the tie beyond Derry's reach.
The home side took full advantage of the wind at their back and went ahead after 16 minutes thanks to the persistence of Ross Gaynor down the left-hand side.
The full -back looked to have lost the ball to Shaun Kelly but managed to claw possession back inside the box and sent the ball across the goalmouth to O'Flynn, who made no mistake to give his side the lead.
Cork deservedly doubled their lead just before half-time when Sheppard reacted quickest at the back post prod the ball past Ger Doherty.
Billy Dennehy's floated corner was cushioned down by his brother Darren and Sheppard was on hand to guide the ball into the net
Sheppard added to his tally on the hour mark and put Cork firmly in control when he volleyed home Garry Buckley's whipped cross.
Derry rallied late on when Patrick McEleney struck the crossbar but the Candystripes were well beaten.
