Shamrock Rovers scored a confidence boosting victory over a young selection from 1860 Munich in the searing heat of Calicut today to keep alive their hopes of progressing to the semi-finals of the Sait Nagjee Trophy.
Rovers started the real business of their Indian pre-season adventure with a defeat to Ukrainian side Dnipro on Monday but they bounced back in temperatures of 29 degrees to register a 3-2 win in a dramatic encounter.
The match officials awarded three penalties in the first half of the game with Gary McCabe's spot kick strike registered between a pair of successful efforts from skipper Michael Kokocinski.
Danny North levelled matters before the interval and Gavin Brennan grabbed the decider with a header just after the interval. Rovers will take on the Argentina U23 Olympics side on Sunday with a chance of progression to the final four of the eight team competition.
