Russell pens St Pat's deal

Saturday January 21 2012

ST Patrick's Athletic confirmed the capture of Sligo midfielder John Russell yesterday, WRITES DANIEL McDONNELL.

But a move for UCD's Paul Corry continues to be delayed due to a change in standard contracts which demands the payment of compensation to all of his former clubs.

Russell will combine football with work in Dublin after two years as a full-time professional with Sligo. He had contemplated emigrating to Canada.

"One of the main factors in deciding to sign was the style of football that Liam (Buckley, manager) wants us to play, which I think is similar to what Paul Cook had us playing in Sligo," said Russell.

"After training with the lads over the past week, I'm really excited to have signed."

Corry had agreed to sign with the Saints, seeing off competition from Sligo. However, the rules now state that a player cannot be registered on a professional contract with a new club unless they have reached agreement on compensation with those that have played a part in his development.
