Rovers had a super chance to take the lead on six minutes when Brandon Miele broke the offside to latch onto Mikey Drennan's through ball, but his shot was deflected over the bar by the out-rushing Derry goalkeeper Gerard Doherty.

Rovers should have taken the lead on 66 minutes but substitute Damien Duff saw his close-range strike saved by Doherty.

The home side broke the deadlock on 74 minutes after Mark Timlin's right-wing corner went all the way to the back post and an in-rushing Dean Jarvis made no mistake heading home his first goal of the season.
