Salthill controlled the opening quarter as left-back Gearoid O Leidhinn drilled a long-range effort narrowly wide, while Sheriff custodian Lee Murphy had to be alert when denying Victor Collins in the 24th minute.

Sheriff, though, should really have taken the lead on 27 minutes, but William Molloy was unable to guide a smashing Stephen Murphy free-kick on target.

The third quarter was tight, but Sheriff pounced in the 52nd minute when Rock headed home a long Stephen Murphy throw to put the visitors in front.

Salthill were ailing and Rock clipped an opportunistic second nine minutes later squeezing home Alan McCabe's assist.

Paul 'Ski' McGee's Devon halved the deficit with 15 minutes remaining when Paddy Quinlan netted following a Gerry Dolan corner, but Sheriff bravely held on for a satisfying success.
