O'Donnell punishes Drogs

Galway United 2
Drogheda United 1

All that matters at this stage of the season is results and Drogheda United's spirited display wasn't rewarded at Terryland Park as Galway United emerged from a fixture that featured three penalties with a vital victory.

Having absorbed Drogheda's early pressure Galway improved and came within a whisker of taking a 31st-minute lead.

Derek O'Brien's wing play was inventive and following a furious scramble, Karl Sheppard's header was cleared off the line by Corey Treacy as the teams departed deadlocked at the break.

That changed in the 55th minute when Stephen O'Donnell nudged Galway ahead with a spot kick after Sheppard had been fouled by Robert Duggan.

Drogheda levelled on 61 minutes courtesy of another penalty -- Glen Fitzpatrick scored when Philip Reilly fouled Brennan.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men on 76 minutes when Peter McMahon was dismissed and O'Donnell bagged the third penalty seven minutes from time.

Galway United -- Ryan; Conneely, McKenzie, Reilly, Walsh; Curran, Foley (King 68), O'Donnell, O'Brien; Molloy (Kelly 41), K Sheppard.

Drogheda United -- Duggan; Treacy (Synott 85), McNally, Daly, Osbourne (McMahon 22); Meenan, Brenna, Crowley, E McGill; Fitzpatrick, McNamara (Flood 68)

Ref -- T Connolly (Dublin); *replaced at half-time by P Sutton (Clare).
