Michael O'Connor's 43rd-minute header fired Shamrock Rovers to victory in Ballybofey last night.

O'Connor nodded the ball past Ciaran Gallagher from close range from Simon Madden's centre.

Just before O'Connor broke the deadlock, Harps survived a real scare.

Madden scuffed his attempt from 25 yards but Brandon Miele seized on the loose ball and let fly. His effort looked certain to find the top corner, but the ball careered wide off the shoulder of a Harps defender.

Harps had their moments in the opening half and Packie Mailey headed straight at Tomer Chencinski from a Ciaran Coll cross.

Sean Houston couldn't keep his shot down, after getting on the end of a clever flick on by Eddie Dsane on the edge of the box.

Ninety seconds into the second half, Danny Devine should doubled the lead when he put over the top from under the nose of Harps keeper Ciaran Gallagher.

Harps had a big let-off just before the hour. The hosts had a penalty appeal waved away at one end before Miele sped past Mailey, only for Gallagher to save

Rovers sub Sam Bone whistled a shot inches over with his first touch in the 78th minute and Chencinski saved from a Bonner daisy-cutter.
