Stephen Kenny’s side made the breakthrough after just eight minutes. Ciaran O’Connor’s cross from the right was dummied by Robbie Benson and Chris Shields steamed in to curl home a stunning effort.

Dundalk continued to press and the pressure told in the 25th minute when Paddy Barrett controlled a Benson free kick on his chest before rifling the ball home via the inside of the post.

The result was put beyond doubt in the 44th minute when Ciaran O’Connor stepped over a Grimes cross, allowing new boy Dean Shiels to mark his full debut with a goal.

Teenage striker Michael O’Connor made it 4-0 in the 74th minute, rising superbly to power an Alan Keane cross past Stephen Conlon.

Youngster Carlton Ubaenuozo impressed throughout and he picked out Shields at the near post in the 78th minute, the skipper hammering home the fifth to set up a quarter final tie with UCD.
