McMillan penalty dents Drogs' runner-up hopes

UCD 1 Drogheda United 0

DROGHEDA'S hopes of finishing second in the league suffered a massive blow as David McMillan's 82nd-minute penalty gave UCD a win at the Belfield Bowl.

The Students were almost in front within two minutes, but Michael Leahy's header was cleared off the line by Philip Hand.

The home side dominated possession without managing to create goal-scoring chances.

The game turned in Drogheda's favour on 72 minutes when Declan O'Brien tangled with UCD's David O'Connor as he was through on goal. O'Connor was shown red for his efforts.

Drogheda had the momentum, but it was UCD who made the breakthrough when McMillan was bundled over in the box by Derek Prendergast. McMillan duly stepped up to slot home the spot-kick.

The visitors thought they had equalised when it appeared UCD 'keeper Ger Bannon had carried the ball over his own line in a goal-line scramble, but Maltese referee Trustin Farrugia Cann, whose lack of English apparently caused confusion for the players throughout the match, ruled it out.
