McMillan brace lifts Students

UCD 3 Cork City 0

The night belonged to UCD and David McMillan, whose goals eased UCD's relegation fears and deepened Cork City's anguish.

For Cork, this loss underlines how far they have to travel to compete at the top end of this division as they are defensively frail and impotent in attack.

UCD went ahead after just 35 seconds when McMillan followed up Darren Dennehy's attempted clearance to calmly guide his shot home.

For a while, Cork's response was impressive. Yet for all their possession, they failed to penetrate, whereas UCD, on a rare first-half attack, nearly added a second when Sean Russell had a low shot cleared off the line.

By the second half, the tide had turned, with Cork a beaten team as soon as McMillan's second – a 35-yard-thunderbolt – hit the net. Hugh Douglas headed in the third to make this UCD's most convincing win of the season and Cork's worst defeat.
