Mathews sponsor delight
Friday March 12 2010
THEY may have been in financial trouble during pre-season, but everything is now Hunky Dory for Drogheda United after they announced a sponsorship deal with the crisp brand worth €100,000.
The two-year deal will see their home ground, United Park, renamed as Hunky Dory Park, with the logo continuing to appear on the Boynesiders' kit.
The deal is a major coup for the club at a time when many Airtricity League clubs are finding it increasingly difficult to renew existing sponsorship deals, as well as securing new ones.
"It's not too often that we have good stories emanating from football in the country, with clubs going to the wall and being punished," said Drogheda manager Alan Mathews yesterday.
"We're able to shout from the rafters about a partnership with a very significant sponsor, so it's good news.
"From the playing end of things, the level of support given to me by the club's board and the sponsors will enable us to have a better season than we had last year.
"It's a difficult environment when everybody's competing (for players) with money, so with fans coming in the gates and sponsorship, it enables us to get where we want to on the pitch."
