Lafferty gives Derry lift
UCD 0 Derry City 2
It wasn't quite an academic result for Derry City, but it was an accomplished one as they finally got their return to the Premier Division on track with a win at UCD.
Having started the game at blistering pace, Derry required Patrick McEleney's presence of mind to produce the opening goal.
He took the ball on the edge of the Students' box, before turning to play a marvellously clipped ball inside for Stephen McLaughlin to finish.
Some of the pace went out of the game after the break, but the slapdash defending didn't.
Eamon Zayed was gifted the ball at the edge of the UCD box, but could only bring a save from Ger Barron.
Derry themselves may well have been saved by referee Graham Kelly minutes later as he judged that Patrick McEleney's foul on Paul Corry took place outside the box.
Gareth McGlynn was most certainly inside the box at the other end when he was presented with a gilt-edged chance to seal the game on 70 minutes, but put his effort wide. Moments later, McLaughlin headed over from a free, before Stewart Greacan hit the post from a corner.
UCD almost equalised from a goalmouth scramble and gave Ger Doherty more than a few scares, but Derry plundered a late goal as Daniel Lafferty hit a clean finish to make the game safe.
