Limerick's remarkable season continued as they booked their place in the EA Sports Cup final with a hard-fought win at League Cup specialists Derry City.

A first-half strike from Stephen Kenny was enough for Martin Russell's side to end their 15-year wait for a League Cup final spot.

In truth, the Munster men deserved to reach next month's final, as they had the better clear-cut chances, particularly in the first half and they defended superbly when they needed to in the second half.

The visitors had a super chance on two minutes but after breaking the offside trap to latch onto Shane Duggan's through ball, striker Chris Mulhall saw his low drive from just inside the box kept out by Gerard Doherty.

Limerick deservedly took the lead on 15 minutes as Sean Russell's left wing centre wasn't cleared properly by Dean Jarvis and Stephen Kenny made no mistake, blasting home the loose ball from close range.

A remarkable double save by Doherty denied Limerick a second on 54 minutes; firstly he parried away Aaron Greene's long-range strike, before getting up and tipping over Mulhall's follow-up shot.

Soon after, Greene had another good chance, but his close-range header was gathered by Doherty.

Limerick 'keeper Freddy Hall had to be at his best moments later as he got down well to keep out Rory Patterson's effort. Derry should have equalised on 77 minutes as McNamee's right wing cross found Josh Daniels, but his close-range header was straight at Kelly.

On 90 minutes, Patterson had a great chance but his close-range header, just like Daniels' earlier effort, was straight at the grateful Hall.

Limerick - Hall, Kelly, Williams, Paud O'Connor, Tracy; Kenny, Paul O'Conor, Duggan, Russell; Greene (Mann 90); Mulhall (O'Flynn 79).
