Dermot Keely last night stepped down as manager of League of Ireland First Division side Shelbourne with immediate effect.

Keely, who took over in the dugout in 2007, will continue with the club however in the role of Youth and Community Development Officer with current assistant Colm O'Neill taking over on a temporary basis. The Shelbourne board last night thanked Keely for his drive and enthusiasm for what has been a turbulent period for the Tolka Park club.

German sprinter Andre Greipel yesterday finally sealed a stage win after a frustrating Giro d'Italia and David Arroyo stayed in overall command with just three days remaining.

Greipel managed his first success of the three-week race after prevailing in a bunched finish through the tight streets of the northern city of Brescia.

Spain's David Arroyo, who has never threatened overall victory in a Grand Tour, was only just behind in the main pack to keep his 2 mins 27 secs advantage over Ivan Basso.

EQUESTRIAN

British riders have a firm grip on the leaderboard after yesterday's dressage phase of the HSBC World Cup qualifier at Tattersalls International Horse Trials in Meath, WRITES Louise Parkes.

Ollie Townend leads the way with the Irish-bred Ashdale Cruise Master and he is followed by Mary King (Apache Sauce), Lucy Wiegersma (Grandtevka Prince) and royal visitor Zara Phillips (High Kingdom). New Zealand's Andrew Nicholson lies fifth with Armada, while Suzanne Jordan is best of the Irish in sixth with Carneyhaug Conquistador.

Ireland's 2009-winning partnership of Patricia Ryan and Fernhill Clover Mist hold equal-12th place, along with Aoife Clark and Master Crusoe, going into tomorrow's cross-country phase, while Ryan's husband, Michael, is two places ahead of her with Ballylynch Adventure, just 10 penalty points off the leader.

Carlow's Sam Watson and Hoyo top the CCI 2-Star dressage, which continues today, but British riders also have a stranglehold on the 1-Star, in which the best of the Irish is fourth-placed Sally Corscadden riding Millridge Kalmar.

Meanwhile, in Rome yesterday, the Irish show jumping team was drawn to go third in today's second leg of the Meydan FEI Nations Cup series.

IRELAND'S Sam Barry extended his fine run in the ITF U-18 Grade 1 Belgian International Junior Championships with another giant-killing feat yesterday.

World No 84 Barry, who is accompanied by Tennis Ireland coaching director Garry Cahill, clinched a semi-final place in the outdoor clay-court event in Charleroi by edging Britain's No 16 seed Oliver Golding, who is placed at 41 in the world ladder, 7-6 1-6 7-5.

Today, unseeded Barry takes on the No 10 seed, Australia's James Duckworth, who shocked the No 2 seed, Hungary's Mate Zsiga, in his quarter-final match.
