Last season, Shamrock Rovers' title challenge failed on the back of their propensity to draw matches, and they are in danger of making the same mistake again after slipping to their fourth stalemate in a row at the Carlisle Grounds.
Michael O'Neill's Hoops had their chances, but the Seagulls battled bravely to earn a point despite finishing the game with 10 men.
Rovers spurned a host of opportunities to take an early lead, with Gary Twigg uncharacteristically missing the target with his attempt to lob Brian Kane after being put through by Dan Murray.
Wanderers should have scored before the break, but John Mulroy fired over from the edge of the box, and Shane O'Connor's shot brushed the post.
The Hoops again missed chances after the interval. Twigg fired Dessie Baker's cross over, and Robert Bayly somehow missed from close range before Kane saved his powerful effort.
O'Connor got his marching orders for a harsh second yellow for a check on Billy Dennehy, but the Hoops couldn't make their man advantage count and were lucky to escape when Danny Murphy appeared to haul David O'Neill down in the box, Tom Connolly ignoring Bray's appeals.
Rovers' miserable night was complete when Murray's goalbound effort was brilliantly saved by Kane.
