Suddenly Athlone Town's mission to avoid the drop doesn't appear impossible. The Midlanders' improvement under Keith Long continued at Lissywollen with an emphatic victory over a disappointing Limerick and they are now only three points behind second-from-bottom UCD.

Philly Gorman fired them ahead after only three minutes and struck again just before the break after Kealan Dillon had added the second on 20 minutes.

Athlone Town: Skinner (Coulter 46); Quigley, Prendergast, A Byrne, S Byrne; Brennan (Byrne 72), Dillon, O'Brien, Hughes, Rusk (Sweeney 68); Gorman.

Limerick FC: Cusack; Nzuzi, Whitehead (Leahy 62), Folan, Williams; Turner, Agyemang (McManus 59), Duggan, Hughes, Murphy (Coughlan 46); Gaffney.

Referee: S Grant (Wexford).
