Greene steals points
Derry City 0 Sligo Rovers 1
SLIGO Rovers substitute Aaron Greene won the points and broke Derry City's hearts with an 85th-minute winner.
The talented winger fired home late on to give the FAI Cup holders the perfect start to the season at the Brandywell.
Stephen Kenny gave debuts to new signings Ruaidhri Higgins, Gareth McGlynn, Stewart Greacen, Eamon Zayed and Stephen McLaughlin.
Rovers were inches away from taking the lead on the half-hour mark, but Matthew Blinkhorn's powerful header from Richie Ryan, which had Gerard Doherty beaten, was headed up on to the underside of the bar by Barry Molloy, before City scrambled it clear.
Soon after a tremendous strike from John Russell skipped off the wet surface, before coming back off Doherty's left hand post, as the visitors stepped up a gear.
Zayed had a great chance to mark his debut with a goal on 41 minutes, but his penalty was saved by Brendan Clarke, after McGlynn was brought down inside the area by Jason McGuinness. The big striker saw his effort from 12 yards saved by Clarke and he incredibly blasted over the rebound.
Right at the death, Rovers stole the points when Raffaele Cretaro's teasing centre wasn't cleared by the home side and fellow substitute Greene fired home from an astute angle.
